HOW THE CHALLENGE WAS BORN
A few weeks ago I started speaking to a few friends of mine about a video series I wanted create. I wanted to ask people to create two videos. The first was to select their favorite poem from my book One Nation, One Mission, One Promise – the continuing journey of fulfilling the promises made on July 4, 1776 and create a video reading the poem. The second part was to share their Unsung American Hero or Heroine. At the end of both videos they would share why the poem they selected was their favorite, what inspired them and how they would take that inspiration to uplift themselves, their family, children, friends, neighbors and community.
I was not only getting positive responses from those close to me, but also from people who I had just met, people who did not know me, people from different backgrounds and professions, who also wanted to take part. I was so honored and so moved, and so THE GREAT AMERICAN CHALLENGE was born.
THE PROBLEM & THE SOLUTION
You see, I believe that if we are consistently buried in problems, we contract, become myopic and have no openness to solutions, but if we come from a place of celebration, an acknowledgement of what we have accomplished and achieved, we can always expand, always be in a space to seek out and find solutions, always look into the future and grow.
There are billions of people in this world and the majority of people are good or humanity would have been gone a long time ago and I just want to hear more of the good.
So THE GREAT AMERICAN CHALLENGE is basically a family reunion, an opportunity for all of us to share uplifting and inspirational ideas that move us forward.
UNSUNG HEROINES & HEROES
I have also been reading amazing stories about the contributions women and men from all walks-of-life, cultures, religions and sexual orientation, Americans who have contributed so much so that we may enjoy the life we have today, people who I call Unsung American Heroines and Heroes, women and men who we don’t all hear about, but without whom we may not have the life we are living today.
THE BEGINNING…
So tomorrow we inaugurate this wonderful series with our first contributor. Her name is Jessica-Brittany Smith and she is one of the most talented, up-and-coming young artists of her generation. She sings, dances and acts with amazing passion. Jessica-Brittany cares a lot about the world around her and she takes her role in society very seriously. The poem she selected is called Free World. I was also really thrilled by her selection of her unsung heroine, which I will let you learn about when you watch her second video later in the week.
