The World Along the High Line

On a beautiful day I recently found myself walking along The High Line, an elevated railroad originally built to serve the many factories and warehouses along 10th and 11th Avenues close to the waterfront in New York City. Long since their heyday, the factories and warehouses have given way to condos and luxury housing, and the railroad tracks have been transformed into a public park.

THE VIEW

The entire park is about twenty-two blocks long and only 30 to 50 feet in width. It is a testament to this amazing city that I have loved so much that within this small amount of space every culture and every religion known to humanity will walk along and enjoy the view, have a great time, and laugh the afternoon away.

THE PROBLEMS

There have been so many stories in the news abot people attacking people. Sometimes with violence, a cop kills an unarmed man. Sometimes with words and images, a man creates an Anti-Islamic ‘Draw Muhammad’ contest. Sometimes with ignorance a politician in Idaho asks whether women can just swallow a tiny camera in order to conduct a gynecological exam of herself remotely with a doctor.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As I walk along and see all these people having a great time together and apart, I know that the majority of humanity is awesome. If not, would we still be here today? I continue to work with love knowing that hope for humanity continues.
